How to optimize Windows Vista

If you need to speed up your currently windows vista installation then you really need to continue reading this article. I will show you some tips that will let your operating system run smoothly... However do not forget that windows vista is RAM hungry! What we are going to do is following this simply guide line step by step:

  • Clean up
  • Tidy up
  • Optimize

- Cleaning up your hard disk means "removing everything is not useful", to do so you need a whatever software like this one: CCleaner. It's very easy, you will just need to select the files you want to remove... Leave everything as it is but check "Advaced" and then "Windows Updates Uninstaller". Click now on "start cleaning" let it finish and you are done.
Now you need to clean up your windows registry from those unused "keys" and once again you should download a whatever program like Registry Cleaner... I suggest you to run CCleaner another time because it's able to clean the registry too! Just go to "Registry", press "Find problems" let it works and then click on "Repair selected..." (choose everything, you can also make a backup copy to be safe...).

- Ok, it's time to set up your computer making a good defragmentation with one of the programs I have already presented in "How to avoid your hard disk running endless"! Pick one from the list and let it do the rest... It's really easy! Remember to defragment your hard disk periodically because windows file system become "messed up" in a short time...

- Now you should optimize Windows Vista... You can actually download and use this little piece of software called "Vista Smoker", it really works give it a shot!
However it isn't a freeware program so you should check this my other post "YouSerials & YouTorrent". This utility is fully automated, once started just press "Auto Tuner" and wait...

You will need to restart your system, after that I suggest you to deactive some unuseful "Services".
Go to start, write down "services" and press "enter", now to halt a service you just need to right click on it, select "Property" and choose "Disabled" from the first drop down menu you can see.
You must stop these services:
  1. Windows Defender, it really sucks... Download another dedicated antivirus like Avira AntiVir, Spybot S&D or NOD32 (this one isn't free by the way...).
  2. Windows Search Indexing, it badly slow down your computer... If you deactive this utility you will ALWAYS be able to search something on your drive like in Windows XP.
  3. Other services that you may not need, like "Tablet PC Input Service", "Parental Control" and "Shadow Copy" (as i said before for windows defender, it's better if you get a dedicated backup software like Norton Ghost!)
Now if you hate that alert message that appear everytime is happening something, then go to Control Panel > User Account > Enable or Disable User Account Control > Uncheck the box and restart your system!

You can also choose to disable the Swap File if you got more then 2gb of RAM... If so, just right click on "Computer" > "Property" > "Advanced System Settings" > click on "Settings" under the "Perfomance" tag > select the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Change" button under "Virtual Memory" > Select "No Paging File" and press "Set". Restart and you are done!

What about Ready Boost?

It's good ONLY if you have less then 1gb of RAM and if you have a fast (and expensive...) external driver (USB keys or SD cards)...!

That's all folks!
Leave a comment if you need help... AleX

PS: I'm not using the english version of Windows Vista so I'm sorry if some paths are not exact!
